ORMOC CITY — A school in Hindang town, Leyte was gutted by fire at around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 14.

Among those damaged by the fire were the Hindang National High School’s library, computer laboratory, and school clinic, according to Police Corporal Aladin Molina of the town’s police.

Based on the investigation, the fire started at the school library.

“Since the school was made of light material, the fire easily spread to the room beside the library,” Molina said.

Fire trucks from the municipalities of Matalom, Hilongos, Inopacan, and Baybay City arrived in the area to help put out the fire.

The fire was controlled at 9:45 a.m.

No casualties were reported.

The Bureau of Fire Protection is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Mayor Betty Cabal said the fire may have spread fast due to several combustible materials stored in the two buildings that were damaged by the fire.

Among the materials that were burned down include the modules for the students and more than 500 chairs, several computer sets, and a copier machine donated by the local government to the school.

Cabal said she was sad since the fire happened barely a week before the school is set to open next Monday, August 22.

“I wanted to cry but chose not to due to this very unfortunate event. At least none of the school’s classrooms were affected,” she said.

The Hindang National High School has more than 1,000 students.
