Perez reappointed as Popcom undersecretary for population, development integration

The Commission on Population and Development (PopCom) has a reason to celebrate its anniversary, after official numbers from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that teenage pregnancy numbers have gone down by 10 percent.

 

MANILA, Philippines — Dr. Juan Antonio Perez has been reappointed as the undersecretary for population and development integration, the Commission on Population and Development (Popcom) announced on Sunday.

Perez took his oath at the University of the Philippines – Population Institute on July 1 before Popcom new board chairperson Dr. Grace Cruz.

Perez will also retain his post as the agency’s executive director, said Popcom.

According to Perez, the agency will present a new population policy to the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“In these policies, stable population growth rate (1.0pct), single digit population poverty rate and zero hunger at household levels will be the center of the [P]hilippine population and development program for the years 2022-2028,” he said in a statement.

“Key policies on family planning for all and a living wage policy which addresses regional poverty thresholds will be pursued by Popcom from the start,” he added.

Perez likewise noted that his continued service in Popcom will allow the “uninterrupted implementation of the country’s reproductive health and family planning programs, upholding sexual and reproductive health and rights of couples, individuals and adolescents, as well as advocating for the Filipino families’ improved quality of lives through decent living wages across the archipelago, among others.”
