Cops outwit hostage taker

When a drunken man took his 1-year-old daughter hostage Sunday morning, the police let the liquor do their work for them. They waited until he fell asleep before one of them sneaked inside his house and took his hostage away. The police later arrested Carlo Suarez, according to Chief Inspector Joey Goforth, the chief investigator of the Pasay police. Initial investigation showed that Suarez, a jeepney driver, took his child hostage for no apparent reason inside their house on R. Higgins Street in Maricaban. With a samurai by his side to ward off any rescuers, Suarez did not ask for anything although he refused to let anyone in, including his wife. When he later fell asleep, Goforth snuck into the room and took the child away. Other officers then moved in and subdued Suarez who, according to his wife, had been drinking for several days.—Miko Morelos

A woman was apparently stabbed and killed by her live-in partner Sunday after he found out that she was pregnant by another man, according to a police report. Senior Inspector Edilberto Nicanor, deputy chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, said they were looking for Francisco Ramos, a security guard, after his neighbor found his partner, Lourdes Cuano, dead due to multiple stab wounds inside the couple’s house on Osmeña Street in Barangay (village) San Francisco del Monte, Quezon City.

Beside the body was a pregnancy test kit which showed that she was expecting another child. Earlier, the couple who had two children living in the province were overheard arguing at 6 a.m. “The suspect must have found out about the pregnancy and this angered him and led him to kill his live-in partner,” Nicanor said. The fighting went on for about an hour before it ended. When the neighbor passed by the couple’s house at around 11 a.m., he noticed that the door was ajar. When he looked inside, he saw the victim’s bloodied body on the floor. The neighbor said he called out to Francisco but the latter was nowhere to be found.—Nancy C. Carvajal
