Enrollment at UP goes high-tech

The University of the Philippines will be no longer be ridiculed as a “University of Pila” during enrollment week.

The country’s national university will launch an integrated information and communication system which aims to transform UP into a modern and digitized learning institution.

The still unnamed electronic infrastructure is known for now as the “e-UP” and is envisioned to improve not just academic transactions but the exchange of  information in all 14 UP campuses and units.

In a statement posted on its website, the university said it would launch the project on March 12 and make the sight of students queuing to enroll and pay their tuition a thing of the past.

The monicker “University of Pila,” coined by past students, is a playful reference to the long lines seen on UP campus during enrollment period.

“The main goal of the e-UP Project is to enable the university to take a leadership role in the development of a globally competitive Philippines,” it read.

The ICT project is part of the university’s strategic plan from 2011 to 2017 to make UP a “modern and digital institution that is responsive to the needs of the Filipino people.”
