Motorcycle back-rider dead in Quezon mishap

LUCENA CITY––A motorcycle back-rider died Thursday in a road accident in Sariaya town in Quezon province, police said Friday.

The Quezon police reported that Mandy Hernandez, 36, was riding a motorcycle driven by Darryl Atienza, 32, when a truck driven by Nicomedes Laurora, 54, hit the vehicle at 7:50 p.m. on the bypass road in Barangay Pili.

Due to the impact, both riders were thrown off the vehicle, landed on the pavement, and suffered injuries.

Hernandez was taken to the Candelaria Municipal Hospital in neighboring Candelaria town but died on the way.

The police said Atienza refused to be brought to the hospital.

Truck driver Laurora sped off after the incident and tried to escape, but police intercepted his vehicle in the village of Sto. Cristo, also in Sariaya.

Laurora was detained at the local police jail. and his truck was impounded by the authorities.
