4-day workweek starts in Iloilo city, province

ILOILO CITY — The city and provincial governments of Iloilo started implementing a four-day workweek on Monday as part of measures to cope with the steep increase in fuel prices.

City Hall employees will be working from Monday to Thursday, between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., to help employees cope with the high fuel costs as well as save on electricity on the part of the city government, said Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas.

“This will also mean an extra day off for their families,” he said in a press conference this week.

Employees in offices providing essential services, including health district centers and the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office, will still be working five days weekly.

Treñas said the measure would be temporary until fuel prices drop.

The Iloilo provincial government also implemented a four-day work schedule for its employees on Monday.

Under an executive order issued by Gov. Arthur Defensor, operations of the provincial government will remain five days per week but employees will be rotated or given schedules to allow them to spend only four days on their assignments, with 10 hours devoted to their tasks per day.

Depending on their tasks and offices, some employees could also maintain a five-day workweek, spending eight hours on the job daily, but their schedule would include a day under a work-from-home mode. —NESTOR P. BURGOS JR.
