Noncandidates don’t need campaign permit – election lawyer

MANILA, Philippines — Election lawyer Romulo Macalintal urged individuals who want to campaign in-person for their candidates in the May 9 elections to challenge the Commission on Elections (Comelec) requirement for a campaign permit.

On Nov. 24, the Comelec required candidates, political parties, or their representatives to apply for permits with the Comelec and the mayor’s office before holding sorties or any in-person campaign activity.

“There is nothing in the resolution that requires noncandidates conducting such activities to get prior approval from Comelec,” Macalintal pointed out.
