New Year’s Day shooting in Makati leaves 3 dead, 4 hurt

MANILA, Philippines — Three people were killed while four others were hurt in a shooting incident in Makati City in the early hours of New Year’s Day, Saturday, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said.

According to the NCRPO, the shooting incident happened at around 2:30 a.m. in Barangay (village) Rizal.

Police said suspect Roderick Perez, 41, initially fled the scene after the shooting but later surrendered to the Makati City Police Station.

Initial investigation showed that the victims were in the middle of a drinking session along Magnolia St. when the suspect who was riding a motor scooter with his 12-year-old daughter, passed by. Investigation showed that Perez and the victims had an argument.

Police said the suspect first took his daughter home but later returned to the scene with a .45 caliber pistol and started shooting.

Killed on the spot were Raymund Libaton, 52; and Petronio Del Rosario, 50. Meanwhile, Francis Lloyd Libaton, 21, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Ospital ng Makati.

Those hurt were identified as Maria Elago, 57; Ian Jayson Biandio, 26; Janet Libaton, 52; and Lester Magcanas, 28. They are now being treated at the same hospital.

Recovered from the scene were several spent shells and a .45 caliber slug. Police said the pistol used in the shooting was not recovered as Perez said he threw it away in his confusion.

Complaints for murder and multiple attempted murder are now being prepared against Perez.
