MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area (LPA) east of Borongan City in Eastern Samar is expected to dump rain over the eastern portions of Visayas and Luzon on Thursday, the state weather service said.

The LPA, which is unlikely to develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, was spotted 675 kilometers east of Borongan City in Eastern Samar at 3 a.m. It entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) late Wednesday afternoon.

According to weather specialist Samuel Duran, the LPA is included within the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which is affecting Palawan, Catanduanes and the rest of the Bicol Region, Visayas, and Mindanao.

“Bagama’t may kalauyan pa itong sentro ng LPA, ngayon po ay inaasahan nating magdadala ito ng mga pag-ulan, lalong-lalo na sa Eastern Visayas at Eastern Luzon,” he said.

(Although the center of the LPA is still far, we are now expecting it to bring rain, especially in Eastern Visayas and Eastern Luzon.)

Meanwhile, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 4 a.m., November 18 weather bulletin that the northeast monsoon, which Filipino term is amihan, will generally affect the Luzon island, including Metro Manila, where partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated precipitation may be anticipated.

No gale warning was raised in any seaboards nationwide, Pagasa also said.
