‘Maring’ leaves P46M worth of damage on agri, infra in Cagayan

MANILA, Philippines — Severe tropical storm Maring has left an estimated P46-million worth of damage on agriculture, livestock, and infrastructure in Cagayan province, a disaster risk reduction and management official said Wednesday.

Cagayan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Head Col. Darwin Sacramed said Maring left P34-million worth of damage in agriculture in the province, P1.2 million in livestock, and P11 million in infrastructure.

He said this was only an initial assessment.

Sacramed said the local government has prepared for disasters such as typhoons. Every year, he said, each barangay in the province is allocated P500,000 for disaster risk management, which amounts to about P3 million in the whole province.

This is on top of the quick response fund allocated in the province. Sacramed said the province so far has P30 million for the quick response fund which is currently on standby.

So far, at least nine people have died from the onslaught of severe tropical storm Maring, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Three people were killed from a landslide in La Trinidad, Benguet, while another was killed in Itogon of the same province.

One drowned in Claveria, Cagayan, while four were killed from flash floods in Narra, Palawan.

Two people were reported injured in Benguet, while 11 were reported missing in landslide and flash flood incidents in Benguet, Ilocos Norte, and Palawan.
