Comelec to COC filers bringing supporters: ‘Don’t kid yourselves, we are still in a pandemic’

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has once again warned aspirants for national positions not to have an entourage during the filing of their certificate of candidacy (COC), saying that such a move could risk other people’s lives.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez, however, believes that candidates no longer need reminders but rather an “adjustment in their determination to comply with the guidelines of the Comelec.”

“We are in the middle of a pandemic still. Regardless of how normal it feels now, it only feels normal because we’ve been under these stressful conditions for such a long time,” Jimenez said.

“Don’t kid yourselves, we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, and if you bring crowds with you you are being irresponsible with the lives of your supporters,” he added.

Jimenez explained that while Comelec guidelines only apply to the filing venue, bringing supporters violates the “rules of common sense.”

“And I think the people should punish that behavior,” Jimenez said.

The COC filing commenced on October 1 and will continue until October 8, Friday.

The Comelec clarified and repeatedly reminded that candidates or aspirants cannot bring along supporters during the filing.
