LEGAZPI CITY – A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed in an encounter with the government troops in Iriga City in Camarines Sur province on Saturday morning.

Captain John Paul Belleza, Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division public affairs chief, said the 49th Infantry Battalion and the police had a 15-minute firefight with the NPA rebels in Barangay San (village) Vicente Norte at around 3:10 a.m. where a still unidentified rebel died.

Belleza said the team responded to information about sightings of armed men in the said remote village.

They also recovered an M16 rifle, materials used in making anti-personnel mines, and other personal belongings.
