Quezon records 158 COVID-19 cases, new highest day tally

LUCENA CITY––The rise in COVID-19 cases in Quezon province continued Thursday as health authorities recorded 158 new patients, the new highest single-day tally since the pandemic began in March last year.

The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) showed in its 5 p.m. bulletin issued Aug. 26 that Candelaria town logged the most cases, with 24, followed by Dolores and Pagbilao towns, with 20 each.

The death toll rose to 922 after the IPHO recorded four fatalities from COVID-19. Two fatalities were recorded in Lucena City and one each in Candelaria and Pagbilao.

At least 161 of the total deaths were recorded this month.

According to the Department of Health, Quezon has eight confirmed Delta variant cases as of Aug. 18.

Quezon, which remains under general community quarantine with heightened restrictions, has 1,693 active cases as of Aug. 26 from 705 on July 23.

Lucena, the provincial capital, has topped the list with 398 active virus carriers. On March 7, the total active cases in the city were down to seven, only to spike in May until they reached the current level.

Data from the IPHO showed that 84,455 residents in Quezon received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as of Aug. 20, while 236,409 received the first dose.

Quezon would need to inoculate at least 1,485,981 of its 2,122,830 population to achieve herd immunity. INQ
