30 ha of MIAA land occupied by informal settlers

/ 04:33 AM August 11, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — Over 30 hectares (ha) of land belonging to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) are being occupied by informal settlers (ISFs) and other parties without paying rent, thus, putting the MIAA’s ownership of these properties at risk.

The Commission on Audit reminded the MIAA to assert its right over three properties with a total area of 309,354 square meters, which are being illegally occupied by the ISFs and other parties, including taking legal action if warranted.

“It appears that MIAA does not have control to safeguard or protect its interest on its own land assets and cannot assert its right to collect rental income from the ISFs and establishments,” a 2020 audit report on the MIAA read.

The MIAA manages Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the country’s international gateway for travelers.
