CORONA IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

Senate summons Arroyo doctor

/ 03:51 AM February 16, 2012

MANILA, Philippines—The attending physician of Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the Supreme Court employee who served its order restraining Justice Secretary Leila de Lima from implementing the travel ban on the former President have been asked to appear as witnesses for the prosecution.

The prosecution, through chief prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr., requested Wednesday the Senate impeachment court to subpoena Dr. Juliet Gopez-Cervantes of St. Luke’s Medical Center and Eric Borlongan, the high court’s process server.

The testimony of Cervantes and Borlongan will be needed on February 20 when the prosecution argues for Article 7 of the impeachment complaint.

Article 7 says Corona betrayed public trust because of his partiality in granting a temporary restraining order in favor of Arroyo and her husband in order to give them an opportunity to escape prosecution and to frustrate the ends of justice.—Cynthia D. Balana
