Ex-rebel yields to authorities in Olongapo City

OLONGAPO CITY—A 49-year-old former rebel has voluntarily surrendered to authorities here, police said over the weekend.

“Romel,” a warehouse worker and a resident of Barangay New Cabalan in this city served in the “Bagong Hukbong Bayan” operating in Zambales, the police said.

Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon, police regional director in Central Luzon, said Romel would be eligible to avail himself of the Comprehensive Local Integration Program. This program helps former rebels restore their allegiance to the government.

De Leon said Romel would also be given a “holistic package of benefits” that include livelihood, medical, education, housing, and legal assistance.
