Police trainee dies, 4 others collapse after 21-km ‘graduation run’ in cop training center in Tacloban

TACLOBAN CITY—A police trainee died while being treated at the Leyte Provincial Hospital in Palo, Leyte after he and four other trainees collapsed during a 21-kilometer “graduation run” Wednesday morning at the Police Regional Training Center in this city.

Kit Adrian Balais, a native of Barygo, Leyte, passed away at past 1 p.m. of the same day, while the four other trainees––Alro Melvin Ardivilla, Japhet Sulibaga, Neil John Barcellano, and Mark Joseph Petagara––
were still being treated at the hospital.

The police report said Balais and other trainees conducted their graduation run from 5:25 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.

A school nurse initially attended to the five trainees, who were immediately brought to the Regional Health Service inside the regional police headquarters.

The five trainees were later transferred to the Leyte Provincial Hospital.

Balais was declared dead by Dr. Evelyn Mejia at 1:30 p.m.

The police have yet to identify the cause of the death of Balais.
