Man killed by creditor in scuffle
DIGOS CITY, Philippines — A man who borrowed P500 from a neighbor in Malita, Davao del Sur, ended up dead on Sunday, after he attacked his creditor with a machete, the Davao del Sur police office here reported Monday.
Senior Supt. Ronaldo Llanera, provincial police director, said Lidas Opong, 60, of Danwata village, was killed during a tussle with Cavelino Mallada, 25.
Mallada earlier went to Opong’s house to collect a four-year debt but instead of getting paid, the latter attacked him with a machete, Llanera said.
He said Mallada was able to wrestle the machete during the scuffle and slit Opong’s throat with it, resulting in the death of the debtor.
The suspect, Llanera said, voluntarily surrendered to the local police.
“The police were preparing appropriate charges against the suspect, who is now being held in jail in Malita,” Llanera said.
