Comelec to launch mobile app for voter registration

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Election (Comelec) on Monday announced the launch of a mobile application in a bid to make the registration process more accessible.

Comelec Commissioner Marlon Cascuejo said the app is set to be launched in Tagum City, Davao Del Norte on Tuesday.

“The launch of the mobile app is very timely in the face of mobility restrictions brought by COVID-19 because you will only need a smartphone to accomplish the form,” Cascuejo, who conceptualized the project, was quoted as saying.

“This will save time, effort, and money that will be otherwise spent on going to a computer shop to download and print the form, or getting the form at the local Comelec to fill it out manually,” he noted.

Cascuejo said, once installed, the mobile app can be accessed on any smartphone and even without an internet connection.

The poll body, however, pointed out that despite the app, the process could not be done fully online and registrants should drop by their respective Comelec offices.

The registrants could use the app to submit necessary personal information.

First, open the app, press ‘get started’ to select the desired type of application then tap ‘proceed’.

After putting all necessary personal information, tap the ‘generate QR code button,’ and save the QR code to the phone gallery.

“A QR Code is generated upon successful accomplishment of the form,” Cascuejo said. “You must save the QR code on your smartphone then afterwards, you may visit your Comelec office to have your QR code scanned and biometrics taken.”

More than 59 million voters have registered for the 2022 local and national elections, and the poll body is hoping to reach more than 60 million voters for the upcoming poll.
