MANILA, Philippines—A male hairdresser was mauled and shot to death while his companion was beaten up by a group of men before dawn Sunday in Barangay (village) Old Balara in Quezon City.

Senior Police Officer 1 Eric Lazo identified the slain victim as Robert Canaria, 29, a resident of Villa Beatriz, Quezon City, and his companion as Ricky Lesemania, 29.

Canaria died due to multiple gunshot wounds at General Malvar Hospital. While the police managed to arrest the six men who killed and wounded the victims, Lazo said they did not recover the shotgun used to kill Canaria. The six were identified as Felipe Abrejo, 50; Ariel Sequira, 20; Jonry Gerbolingo, 25; Francisco Gutierrez, 24; Benigno Doron, 25; and Edmar Bargaso, 21.

According to Lesemania, he and the victim were walking on Rose Street with two other friends when they passed by the six men who were having a drinking spree. He said that as they passed by, one of the six threw a liquor bottle at them. When he approached them to ask what the matter was, a fight broke out. Abrejo later pulled out an improvised shotgun and shot Canaria while Lesemania was beaten up by the former’s companions.
