Some LGUs in E. Visayas suspend classes due to tropical Storm Dante

TACLOBAN CITY – Several local governments on Tuesday suspended all classes and work amid the threat of Tropical Storm Dante.

In his order, Eastern Samar Gov. Ben Evardone said government agencies involved in the delivery of basic and health services as well as disaster response, however, shall continue working to respond to possible emergencies.

In Samar province, Catbalogan City Mayor Dexter Uy also released an order calling for the suspension of classes and works across the city except for those involved in relief operations.

In Northern Samar, Palapag Mayor Ricardo Batula warned fishermen and light sea crafts not to venture out to sea due to the tropical storm.

He also directed the opening of the two major dams in the town to avoid any possible flooding.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported that at least 574 passengers were stranded in various ports in the region due to Dante.

Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez on Tuesday suspended all classes and work starting 1 p.m. amid the threat of “Dante.”

Based on an executive order he issued, works of those involving peace and order, traffic management, disaster management and health and sanitation will, however, continue.

In Calbayog City, Samar, its city disaster risk reduction management council, chaired by Mayor Diego Rivera, has also issued an order that cancels both work and classes in the city beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that all of its equipment and vehicles were ready for any eventualities.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has also prepositioned 10,809 food packs for those who will be displaced due to the typhoon.
