Cagayan mayor contracts COVID-19; denies breaching protocols

TUGUEGARAO CITY — Mayor Joan Dunuan of Baggao town in Cagayan province on Sunday (May 30) confirmed that she tested positive for COVID-19 based on the swab test result she received on the same day.

In an interview with the Inquirer, Dunuan said she has not displayed symptoms of COVID-19 and is on home quarantine.

She also denied allegations that she breached health protocols when a video and photographs showing her dancing without a face mask at an event.

“Those were taken more than a year ago when we were still allowed to go out. This is only a political stunt of my opponents to tarnish my image,” she said.

According to the mayor, a case of a South African variant (B.1.351) of COVID-19 was also recorded in the town, prompting her to place the town hall on a lockdown for disinfection.

Baggao has 191 active COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths as of Saturday.
