Installation of Advincula as Manila archbishop set

MANILA, Philippines — After being vacant for more than a year, the seat of the Manila archbishop will be filled by Cardinal Jose Advincula of Capiz on June 24, the commemoration of the founding day of the country’s capital city, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) announced on Sunday.

Advincula will officially become the 33rd Archbishop of Manila, succeeding Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who was named Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of the Peoples in Vatican.

His installation will be separated into a “series of events” from June 24 to June 27 to ensure the observance of minimum health protocols, the CBCP explained.

“This will ensure that, while the different groups and sectors in the Archdiocese of Manila are given a chance to welcome the new archbishop, health protocols are strictly observed,” the bishops said.

The CBCP said the solemn installation and Mass would be held at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, where Advincula would be welcomed by Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso.

At 8:30 a.m., a civic ceremony will be held at the Bureau of Treasury, the old Manila City Hall located at the Ayuntamiento, with Domagoso and the mayors of Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasay and San Juan cities.

The archdiocese encompasses these four cities apart from Manila.
