Heavy rains cause flooding in 4 Lapu-Lapu barangays
PARTS of four barangays in Lapu-Lapu City were flooded in ankle-deep water yesterday following a night of continuous rain that lasted till dawn.
Around 2,500 houses in ten sitios were affected in barangays Basak, Marigondon, Poblacion and Pusok.
A 10-man team equipped with suction pumps and rescue equipment was deployed in the water-logged areas.
The rains started last Monday.
Barangays Basak and Marigondon were among the most affected.
In sitios Iba and Eskwelahan of Basak, some families moved to the barangay hall, leaving their houses half-submerged in floodwater.
Article continues after this advertisement“I was again alarmed by the flooding yesterday. This would mean we have to evacuate to the school if my house goes underwater again,” said Ronie Amaro, a resident.
Article continues after this advertisementThe Basak area, where plans for a drainage project have yet to be implemented by the barangay, also experienced heavy flooding last December because its culverts could not hold the large volume of water from other barangays and the airport area.
Accumulated garbage that clogs the canals also contributed to the flooding.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Radaza has allotted P30 million for a drainage project in Basak, a low-lying barangay easily affected by flashfloods.
The mayor tasked the city engineering office to study and solve the flooding in the area.
Other barangays of Bangkal, Pajac, Pusok, and Gun-ob also had flooding problems but to a lesser degree.
