TEHRAN – Iran hanged in a prison on Sunday two brothers convicted of kidnapping and murder in the southwestern city of Dezfoul, the Mehr news agency reported.

The report identified the men sent to gallows as Karim and Rahim Pourmahoud, who were convicted of abducting a 16 year-old boy, the son of a jeweller.

When the kidnapping went wrong, the brothers killed the boy, the report said without elaborating.

The latest hangings bring to 154 the number of executions reported in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP count based on media and official reports.

Iranian media reported 179 hangings last year. But international human rights groups say the actual number was much higher, making the Islamic republic second only to China in the number of people it put to death.
