To fight Tyson Marquez for WBA flyweight title March 24

Former WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol of Mandaue City will get another shot at a world title on March 24 against World Boxing Association (WBA) flyweight champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez of Mexico.

The 30-year-old Mayol (30W-5L-2D, 22 KOs) is based in Los Angeles, California and has won four straight fights since losing his title to Omar Nino Romero of Mexico two years ago.

He has been publicly challenging Marquez for a fight since last year. Last August 6, 2011, Mayol had a homecoming fight at the Mandaue City Sports Complex and won by unanimous decision against Jayson Rotoni of Metro Manila. His title shot however, will once again take place in Mexico.

Mayol became World Boxing Council (WBC) champion in the 108 lb. division in 2009 when he won by TKO in the second round against Edgar Sosa of Mexico in a controversial fight marred by a clash of heads in a fight held in Chiapas, Mexico. Mayol has campaigned at the 112 lb category since becoming an ex-champion.

The 23-year-old Marquez (32W-2L, 25 KOs) has a record of one win with two losses against Filipino boxers. Last July 2, 2011, he stopped Edrin ‘The Sting’ Dapudong of North Cotabato in three rounds for a successful first title defense. In 2010, Marquez suffered back-to-back losses to Richie Mepranum of Sarangani and Nonito Donaire, Jr.

Marquez made a successful second defense of his belt last October by stopping Luis Concepcion of Panama in a single round. Marquez also owns a decision win over his countryman and recent Cebu visitor, Juan “Panterita” Esquer in 2009.
