Mactan underwater tunnel pushed

08:49 AM February 08, 2012

REP. Rachel “Cutie” del Mar (Cebu City north district) has a solution to the traffic congestion to and from the Mactan Cebu Airport—an underwater tunnel connecting Cordova town in Mactan Island to Cebu City.

Del Mar said traffic felt during the Sinulog last month from the airport to Cebu City was proof of the need for an alternative route to Mactan Island.

With this in mind, Del Mar said she was pushing for the approval of her bill to construct the underwater tunnel.

“We really need the tunnel now.  Traffic was so bad for our Sinulog visitors.  Traffic at the airport even lasted until 3 a.m. and it’s not visitor friendly,” Del Mar told Cebu Daily News.

Del Mar said the tunnel project would complement a plan to already transfer the airport to a reclaimed portion of Cordova.

Her proposed bill, Del Mar said, is now pending review before the public works committee of the Lower House./Chief of Reporters Doris C. Bongcac
