Woman dies of cardiac arrest as floods rampage through her village

LINAMON, Lanao del Norte—A still unidentified woman died of cardiac arrest at the height of a flash flood at the coastal village in a town in Lanao del Norte province on Thursday (March 11).

Heavy rains that lasted until 11 p.m. on Thursday led to flash flood at the village of Kawit Occidental in Kauswagan town, where the woman lived.

Other villages—Lapayan, Tacub, Tugar, Lisum and Bandol—were flooded, too.

In Tacub, village chief Melanie Avelis said at 69 families were evacuated from their homes and sent to a temporary shelter at the village gym when floodwaters rose knee-deep around 8:30 p.m.

The Army’s 4th Mechanized Infantry Battalion sent two military vehicles and soldiers to help disaster mitigation workers in rescue operations.

The evacuated families were given food aid and allowed to return home early on Friday.

At the height of the flood, the Lanao del Norte Electric Cooperative cut off power to Kauswagan town. The outage reached the towns of Linamon, Poona Piagapo and Matungao. Power was back by midnight.
