Outstanding UP alumni to be awarded on June 25

Forty outstanding graduates including Vice President Jejomar Binay and one alumni chapter of the University of the Philippines will receive recognition awards from the UP Alumni Association (UPAA) for 2011.

The award ceremonies will be held during the UP general alumni-faculty homecoming and reunion on June 25 starting at 3 p.m. at Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman campus, Quezon City.

The UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awards are conferred on alumni who have demonstrated in their fields of endeavor extraordinary achievements and contributions that bring substantial benefits to society and distinct honor to the university.

Binay is this year’s Most Distinguished Alumni Awardee. Araceli F. Limcaco-Dans, Jose R. Moreno, Corazon C. Generoso-Iñigo and Baldomero M. Olivera will be recognized for lifetime achievement

“Like we did last year, we made a special effort to identify unsung alumni achievers—those whose accomplishments in little—known corners of the country are remarkable but have remained unheralded and unrecognized,” UPAA president Gladys Tiongco said in a statement.

The other awardees for outstanding achievement are: Danielito T. Franco, agricultural engineering; Luisita D. Cruz-Valdez, broadcast journalism; Rex B. Demafelis, chemical engineering; Teresita B. Ang-See, community empowerment and responsibility; Robert H. Lo, community service;

Ricardo V. Zamora, Jimmuel C. Naval, Grace Nono, Raul C. Navarro, and Jerrold V. Tarog, all for culture and the arts;

Alleli Ester C. Domingo and Lino L. Dizon, both for education innovation; Daniel S. Bolong and Roberto P. Alingog, both for entrepreneurship and employment creation; Marita V. Tolentino-Reyes and Deogracias Victor B. Savellano, both for good governance;

Dr. Francisca A. Tolete-Velcek, global health and medical education; Dr. Eliseo L. Prisno III, maritime health/global health; Jose C. Gatchalian, labor management cooperation for industrial peace and harmony; Lourdes C. Santos-Rivera, poverty alleviation and human development; Ma. Isabel S. Echanis-Melgar, public health promotion; Fortunato T. dela Peña and Teodoro J. Herbosa, public service;

Cristina P. Parel, Arcelia A. Alejar, Secretary Mario G. Montejo, Danilo C. Cardenas, and Bonifacio F. Comandante Jr., all for science and technology;

Ramon P. Ramirez and Dr. June Caridad C. Pagaduan-Lopez, both for social cohesion; and Josefina R. Almonte, women empowerment.

Special awards will be given to individuals or groups who have rendered excellent service in the pursuit of the goals of the university and the association.

The Distinguished Service Award for alumni will go to Raymund L. Liongson and Conrado Ong III. The UPAA Australia-New South Wales chapter will also be recognized.

The Special Recognition Awardees are Shamcey G. Supsup, for bagging this year’s Binibining Pilipinas-Universe title, and John Gabriel P. Pelias, for achieving a weighted grade average of 1.016, the highest in UP in 65 years.
