Korean wanted for fraud found dead in BI premises

MANILA, Philippines—A Korean national wanted for fraud was found dead on Monday (Jan. 4) while in the custody of the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

According to Immigration spokesperson Dana Sandoval, the body of Son Byeongkweon, 52, was found at the BI Warden Facility (BIWF) around 7 a.m.

Son, considered a fugitive from justice with a warrant of arrest in Korea for fraud, was committed to the facility last Dec. 29 after he was intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Sandoval said when Son was found appearing to be lifeless, BIWF nurses “immediately assessed the situation and found him” to have died already.

The case was reported to forensics experts of the Philippine National Police for an investigation.

The BI, Sandoval said, had also coordinated with the Korean Embassy for the body’s repatriation as the bureau waits for results of the PNP investigation.
