MANILA, Philippines — The state weather service on Saturday was monitoring two low pressure areas (LPA) in Mindanao and Visayas that are forecast to bring rain over parts of the country.

The first LPA entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) at 8 a.m., and was located 135 kilometers north-northwest of Zamboanga City.

The other weather disturbance developed at 8 a.m. on Saturday and, as of 4 p.m., was some 185 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the weather disturbances were not likely to intensify into tropical depressions, but the combined effects of the two LPAs will bring moderate rain over the Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Bicol regions.

Still over the sea

Senior weather specialist Chris Perez said that while the center of these weather disturbances were over the sea, its thick cloud bands would still affect parts of the country.

Pagasa warned of possible hazards brought by continuous rains, such as floods and landslides. Pagasa also warned of possible swelling of channels and rivers that could lead to flooding.

There will be some improvement with the weather in Eastern and Western Visayas and Mindanao on Sunday as the LPA is forecast to move toward the northwest and western boundary of PAR.

Meanwhile, the LPA near Visayas will move toward the eastern section of Southern Luzon.

“While there is a small chance that these LPA will develop into tropical depressions, we’re closely monitoring the weather disturbances for possible effects,” Perez said. INQ
