MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it does not expect a tsunami to ensue from the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that shook the Soccsksargen region on Wednesday morning.

(The intensity that was felt was Intensity V in General Santos. At least it won’t cause a tsunami in General Santos and if the highest is only at Intensity V, we won’t expect damage.)

Phivolcs said the tremor hit 11 kilometers (kms) northeast of Alabel, Sarangani at 7:22 a.m. State seismologists also said the quake was reported as Intensity V in General Santos City; Intensity IV in Kiamba, Sarangani, Tupi and Koronadal City, South Cotabato; and Intensity III in Alabel, Sarangani and Kidapawan City.
