Impunity in GenSan: Village chief dead after gun attack on busy street

GENERAL SANTOS CITY—A village chief of a town in Sarangani province was shot and killed by motorcycle-riding assailants on Wednesday (Dec. 9) on a busy street here, according to police.

Isedrito P. Cañete, 56, chair of Glan Padidu village of Glan, Sarangani and ex-officio town councilor of Glan, was shot by motorcycle-riding gunmen near the village of Lagao at 10 a.m., said Maj. Rommel Constantino, Lagao police station chief.

Lagao said the gunmen had been tailing the village chief’s Toyota Fortuner minutes before the attack.

Cañete, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay of Glan, was sitting in the front seat when shot as his vehicle stopped at a traffic light. One of two men on the motorcycle alighted and approached the Fortuner’s passenger side and opened fire with a .45 caliber pistol.

Canete suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to Constantino.

Canete’s driver was unharmed and is now in police custody for his security. Police are searching for leads in footage of security cameras which could have captured the attack.
