Siony leaves P4.9M agriculture damage in Batanes, says governor
MANILA, Philippines — Severe tropical storm Siony (international name: Atsani) left Batanes with some some P4.9 million in agriculture damage, Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco on Saturday reported.
“Meron po kaming pinsala sa agrikultura at yung damage sa agriculture ni Typhoon (sic) Siony dito ay mga P4.9 million po,” Cayco said during the Laging Handa press briefing.
(We have reported damage in agriculture due to Siony and this is estimated at P4.9 million.)
Cayco, meanwhile, said that the local government has not recorded any damage to infrastructure and houses due to Siony.
“Wala pong naapektuhan na ating mga constituents, wala pong nasira na mga bahay, kalsada, at imprastraktura,” she said.

The governor said days before Siony passed through the province, the local government had already made preparations.
“Agad kong pinulong ang Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council at minobilize ko ang lahat ng concerned agencies. Sila ay 24 hours na nakaantabay, maging ang aming PDRRMC office at aking opisina ay nanatiling naka-antabay upang bantayan ang galaw ng bagyo,” she said.
(I immediately met with the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and mobilized all the concerned agencies. They are on standby for 24 hours, and the PDRRMC and my office closely monitored the storm.)
“Bantay na bantay po namin ito dahil ito ‘yung kauna-unahang bagyo na pumunta sa amin dito sa Batanes at ang mga tao po automatic, sila po ay nagtatali ng mga bubong, lalo na ‘yung mga may light materials,” she added.
(We have monitored this because this is the first storm that passed through Batanes, and the people automatically tied their roofs, especially those light materials.)
Siony, the 19th tropical cyclone to enter the Philippines in 2020, dumped rains over Batanes and the Babuyan Islands.
The severe tropical storm exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility at 12 a.m. on Saturday.
