P488M worth of infra, crops lost to Typhoon Quinta in Quezon province

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Quinta brought at least P488 million in damage to agriculture and infrastructure in Quezon province, Governor Danilo Suarez said Thursday.

“Sa pagdating naman sa total damage ng Quinta, P488 million ang total damage,” Suarez said in a televised briefing.

(When it comes to the total damage of Quinta, it is worth P488 million.)

“That is agriculture, rice, corn, vegetable, fruits, coconut, herbal at saka mga infra. Medyo marami kaming nasirang mga farm-to-market [roads],” he added.

Suarez said he expects the prices of bananas to increase due to the typhoon’s damage in Quezon’s banana plantations.

“Yung limang bayan po, ubos lahat ang saging. I would expect the price of banana to go up. Kasi kami ang supplier ng almost National Capital [Region] up to Bulacan. And banana, I think one year seven months bago tumubo muli,” he said.

(Five towns lost their banana crops. I would expect the price of bananas to go up. We are the supplier of the National Capital Region until Bulacan. And bananas takes a year and seven months before growing back.)

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has reported that the total damage in agri-fisheries caused by Typhoon Quinta reached P705 million.

The DA said affected commodities include rice, corn, high-value crops, fisheries, livestock, irrigation, and agri-facilities.
