MANILA, Philippines — “It is every children’s right to have [an] education.”

Rejhon Soriano Modesto, a senior high school teacher based in Manila, reminded the public of the basic child rights as some of his students continue to suffer from financial issues for distance learning.

Modesto turned to social media to start a fundraiser to help his students who are forced to work to buy cellphones and internet load to keep up with their education.

In a Facebook post, Modesto said one of his students would help in carrying fishnets in their province in Marinduque.

“Siya po ay nalockdown sa kanilang probinsya sa Marinduque. Nagawan na po natin ng paraan yung smartphone, pagpapakabit ng internet connection at tulong para sa nasalantang pananim nila,” he said.

(He is in Marinduque which is on lockdown. We already found a smartphone for him to use. Internet connection is now needed as well as financial aid after their crops were destroyed.)

Another one of his students in Batangas is also in need of money for the internet. The student is working as a delivery boy to help fund his education as well as bring food for his family, Modesto said.

He said the remaining donations would be allocated for funding of gadgets and other educational needs of other poor students.

“Sobrang sakit. Ito lang po ang tanging magagawa ko po dahil mababa rin naman po ang sahod ng mga kagaya kong guro,” Modesto said.

(It really hurts. This is the only thing that I can do because as a teacher I also have a low salary.)
