Magnitude 5.4 earthquake rocks Aurora; intensities felt in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rocked Aurora on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The earthquake—which state seismologists earlier recorded at magnitude 5.1—struck at 10:10 a.m. around 15 kilometers southwest of San Luis town.

It was of tectonic in origin, and had a 7-kilometer depth of focus.

Phivolcs said the tremor was felt in other areas of Luzon, including cities in Metro Manila, at various intensities:

  • Reported Intensity VI – Baler, Aurora
  • Reported Intensity V – San Luis, Dipaculao and Maria Aurora, Aurora
  • Reported Intensity IV – Casiguran, Dingalan, Aurora; Gabaldon, and Palayan City, Nueva Ecija
  • Reported Intensity III – Obando, Bulacan; Villasis, Pangasinan; City of Paranaque; City of Antipolo, Rizal;
  • Reported Intensity II – Santo Domingo, Nueva Ecija; Malolos City and Plaridel, Bulacan; City of Baguio; City of Manila; City of Malabon; City of Navotas; Quezon City; City of Valenzuela
  • Reported Intensity I – Gapan City, Nueva Ecija; Guinayangan, Quezon
  • Instrumental Intensity IV – Palayan City, Nueva Ecija
  • Instrumental Intensity III – San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Santiago City, Isabela
  • Instrumental Intensity II – Cabanatuan City and San Jose City, Nueva Ecija; Malolos City, Bulacan; City of Baguio; City of Navotas
  • Instrumental Intensity I – Guagua, Pampanga; City of Marikina; City of Malabon; Quezon City; Guinayangan, and  Mauban, Quezon; Iriga City, Camarines Sur; Dagupan City, Pangasinan

Aftershocks and damage are expected, Phivolcs added.
