Sangley Point heat index hits 50°C

MANILA, Philippines — Sangley Point in Cavite had a scorching Friday afternoon as the heat index in the area reached 50°C, the state weather bureau said.

According to data from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) showed that the temperature was recorded at 2 p.m.

Dagupan City’s heat index, meanwhile, also sizzled with a scorching temperature of 47°C.

Davao City, Dipolog City, the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija and Ambulong, Tanauan City in Batangas likewise felt a searing day as Pagasa recorded a heat index of 46°C in these areas.

As for Metro Manila, a 40°C heat index was recorded at the Science Garden in Quezon City.

The heat index, as the state weather bureau defines it, is a “human discomfort index that gives the ‘apparent’ temperature or what humans perceive or feel as the temperature affecting their body.”

Heat indexes ranging between 41 to 54ºC are already considered as “dangerous”, and may health risks such as heat cramps and heat exhaustion, with a heatstroke probable, with continued physical activity.
