No sail policy in Visayas still in effect, says Coast Guard

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)  reminded the public on Friday that the no sail policy remains in effect in the Visayas as the country continues to fight the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

PCG issue the reminder after some reports said that sea travel in Bohol and Cebu during the Lenten season has resumed.

“The Philippine Coast Guard reiterates that the no sail policy remains in effect in the Visayas region, as a precautionary measure against the COVID-19 pandemic,” PCG said in a statement.

“The PCG reminds the public that majority of the provinces in the Visayas remains on lockdown, as declared by their respective local government units,” it added.

PCG explained that the no sail policy covers all passenger and private vessels.

“Cargo vessels, fishing boats, tugboats, and government vessels are allowed to sail, however, crew members onboard are subjected to stringent health protocols,” PCG said.

PCG also said that passengers of these vessels are ordered to strictly observe social distancing.

“Amid the battle for public health and safety, the PCG urges the public to cooperate with the government and avoid spreading false information,” the Coast Guard said.

As of April 9, there are 4,076 COVID-19 cases in the country, with the death toll reaching 203.
