Danao, Carcar groups bag major awards

It was a grand-slam win for the student contingents of Danao and Carcar cities, which  bagged yesterday’s major awards in the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan dance competition..

Danao City East District- Danao City Central School and Carcar City Division won  Best in Musicality, Best in Costume and were hailed champions for the elementary and secondary division respectively.

Catherine Estenzo, Carcar’s choreographer, cried after results were announced.

Her father, Bernardo Quindala, died of a  heart attack last Dec. 9.

Her co-teachers said  the choreographer had pushed herself to continue with group rehearsals even during the funeral wake in order to present a  the city’s “Musika Halad sa Sto. Niño” (Music in offering to the Sto. Niño).

Carcar City Mayor Nicepuro Apura, who received the trophy, was thankful for the   Pasigarbo sa Sugbo, the annual competition of Cebu festivals  of the provincial government.

Gener Caringal, chairman of the board of judges, said they gave weight to  performance, choreography and the musicality of the  dance performances.

Caringal, who also judged the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo in 2011, said judges noted improvements in the dances through “restaging” that made it more interesting.

“They’ve learned from their past mistakes,” he said.
