Cavite now under state of calamity amid restive Taal Volcano

MANILA, Philippines — The entire province of Cavite has been declared under a state of calamity as ash and magma continues to gush from the Taal Volcano.

Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla told Rayo Inquirer in an interview that the provincial board of Cavite passed Resolution No. 1389-2020 on Wednesday to place the province under a state of calamity.

Thousands of residents from Batangas and Cavite have been evacuated after authorities raised Alert Level 4 over Taal Volcano, which means that an “explosive eruption” could happen in the coming hours or days.

Taal Volcano, which straddles parts of Batangas province, had been restive for months until it suddenly rumbled back to life on Sunday afternoon, spewing a giant ash column into the sky after a phreatic eruption occurred in its main crater.

Batangas was already placed under a state of calamity on Monday, January 13, a day after Taal Volcano’s steam-driven eruption.
