Rape-murder convict freed under GCTA yields to MPD

MANILA, Philippines — A 73-year-old rape-murder convict, who was given early freedom under the good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law, surrendered to the Pandacan Police Station of the Manila Police District on Saturday morning.

The convict, who surrendered at around 10 a.m., was presented to Lt. Col. Julius Añonuevo, chief of the Pandacan Police Station.

According to police, the man, whose name was withheld, was found guilty of two counts of homicide and three counts of rape on June 26, 1993.

He was sentenced to three terms of reclusion perpetua, each of which is equivalent to 40 years of imprisonment.

Police said the convict was released on July 8, 2019, after serving only 30 years of his sentence.
