Briones supports no homework policy from kindergarten to high school

MANILA, Philippines — Department of Education (DepEd) secretary Leonor Briones supports the no-homework policy from kindergarten to high school proposed at the House of Representatives.

“I am in favor of this,” Briones said Tuesday in an interview at dzMM when sought for her opinion on the proposed measure.

Briones said DepEd wants formal education to be done inside the schools so that students have time to bond with their families at home.

“Ang gusto natin, lahat ng pormal na pag-aaral, assignments, projects, whatever, gawin sa loob ng eskwelahan. Pag-uwi nila, libre na sila, freetime na nila to be with their parents, with their friends,” Briones said.

In fact, Briones said the same policy was already implemented by the DepEd, but some schools seem to insist on giving assignments to students.

“Pagdating ko, ginawa na namin itong policy. Ang predecessor ko, may policy din. Pero mayroon pa rin mga schools na nasanay talaga sa pagbibigay ng homework,” Briones said.

“Meron tayong policy na dinidiscourage natin ang homework dahil alam naman natin na minsan ang homework, hindi naman ang bata ang gumagawa pagdating sa bahay. At nawawalan paminsan ng panahon ang bata, ang parents, ang mga lola na mag-bond,” she added.

Separate measures proposing a no-homework policy were passed at the House of Representatives by Deputy Speaker Evelina Escudero and Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas.

Escudero’s bill seeks to eliminate homework and limit school activities to the campus while Vargas’ measure wants to stop teachers from assigning homework during the weekends. /muf
