DOJ orders NBI to probe Customs officials allegedly involved in corruption
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a probe on the alleged corruption at the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
In an order released Friday, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra also ordered the NBI to file appropriate criminal complaints against BOC personnel who will be found to be involved in corruption.
Meanwhile, NBI Director Dante Gierran was also directed to submit to Guevarra progress reports on its probe and status of case build-up.
The DOJ issued the order after President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned in his fourth State of the Nation Address that he had asked leaders of Congress to rid the BOC of corruption by asking its officials to report to Congress daily.
“And if I cannot dismiss them for the reason that there is a security of tenure, I will just allow them to have their plantilla positions but they have to report to Congress every day to help me in the huge paperwork that we have to do everyday,” Duterte said during his Sona. /muf
