Death by hanging or firing squad? Imee quips: ‘Sobrang lupit naman nun’

MANILA, Philippines — While she is open to the restoration of the death penalty in the country, neophyte Senator Imee Marcos strongly rejected proposals to do it either by firing squad or hanging.

“Diyos ko, huwag. Huwag namang ganun. Sobrang lupit naman nun, hindi pwede ‘yun,” Marcos said during the regular Kapihan sa Senado on Thursday.

The senator noted that during the time of her father, the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, only one person, drug lord Lim Seng, was executed by firing squad.

But she said even her father, and probably the entire nation, got scared after witnessing the public execution of the Chinese businessman.

So when she was in Congress, Imee said she strongly pushed for the abolition of the capital punishment in the country.

But President Rodrigo Duterte, during his state of the nation address last Monday, revived the reimposition of the death penalty for heinous crimes related to drugs as well as plunder.

If ever it would be imposed again, the senator said it should be imposed to a “very, very limited list of crimes.”

“And addition to that list, we should impose a standard, ikaw nga, guidelines,” she said.

When asked then if she is now open to the reimposition of the death penalty, Imee said: “Yes, I think so.”

“Pero yun nga, very, very limited sana ang sakop, very limited din ang use and imposition.”

She said the death penalty should be limited to big time drug trafficking or to inhumane, brutal, and violent crimes such as terrorism. /je
