Amid reports of Cabinet revamp, Palace says Piñol still enjoys Duterte’s trust

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte is yet to show any indication that he has lost trust and confidence in Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol, Malacañang said Tuesday.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo issued the statement after a source, who requested anonymity for lack of authority to talk to the media, revealed that Duterte is disappointed with certain members of his official family.

Among those reportedly being assessed is Piñol, who was previously rumored to be on his way out of the Department of Agriculture because of the country’s rice woes last year, which include insufficient supply and high prices that eventually triggered a staggering spike in inflation.

“‘Yung kay Secretary Piñol di ba several months ko na narinig ‘yan na papalitan wala naman (We’ve heard that for several months, but so far there’s none),” Panelo said in a Palace briefing.

Asked if the Agriculture secretary still enjoys Duterte’s trust and confidence, Panelo said: “I think so. Wala naman siyang sinasabi sa amin na hindi siya happy (He never mentioned anything that he is unhappy).”
