MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo and former President Benigno Aquino III were among the early birds in their respective voting precincts on Monday, queueing up under the scorching heat of the midday sun which fried tempers and, as some election observers said, caused many vote-counting machines to conk out.
President Duterte cast his vote in Davao City at 4:35 p.m.

Across the archipelago, candidates patiently waited in long lines for their turn to vote, exchanging pleasantries with other voters as their bodyguards, or police escorts in the case of detained Sen. Leila de Lima, stayed vigilant outside the precincts.
Except for isolated cases of harassment in the provinces by people identified with politicians and candidates, the Philippine National Police said the elections were generally trouble-free.
