Palace declares 18-day holiday truce

MANILA, Philippines—The government will observe an 18-day holiday ceasefire with the communist New People’s Army starting Friday, President Aquino announced on Thursday.

“There will be a suspension of military operations starting tomorrow and if I’m not mistaken until January 2,” President Aquino told reporters  after he signed into law the P1.8-trillion national budget for 2012.

The Chief Executive said this was upon the advice of both the presidential adviser on the peace process and the Department of National Defense.
