PNP: 10 deaths in 22 election-related incidents

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday that 10 individuals were killed while 11 were injured in 22 violent incidents related to the midterm polls since the election period started on January 13 until April 30.
In a text message to reporters, PNP spokesperson Police Col. Bernard Banac said 14 persons who also figured in the incidents were unharmed.
Banac said the recorded incidents were spread in different parts of the country and no region gets the bulk of violent incidents related to the midterm elections.
Ten of the fatalities were either election candidates or their supporters, according to Banac, who also explained that the incidents were automatically tagged as election-related since it happened within the election period.
The PNP remains on full alert status and will deploy 160,000 personnel to secure the public during the elections.
