MANILA, Philippines – On May 1, 2019, Labor Day, various groups championing workers’ rights took to the streets and called for better working conditions. These include ending contractualization or “endo (end of contract),” the passing of the Security of Tenure Act, and increasing minimum wages nationwide to P750 per day.
Braving blistering summer heat, leaders and members of labor unions and progressive organizations marched from Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City, to key places in Manila such as the Mendiola Peace Arch in San Miguel, Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, and Liwasang Bonifacio, formerly called Lawton.
Ground reports from police authorities said that more than 4,000 people joined the protest, but event organizers said that the number could be well around 10,000./ac
